Risk Factors for Hospitalization among Aged Medicaid Home and Community Based Services Users

Principal Investigator(s)

Howard B. Degenholtz, PhD

This study is examining the rate of hospitalization among aged Medicaid HCBS waiver clients and identifying factors associated with hospital readmissions.  Using the results, Dr. Howard B. Degenholtz will examine whether the waiver can prevent or delay permanent nursing home placement and the dynamics of post-acute care in this population. This has significant policy interest, as states have invested in programs to assist the transition from nursing homes to the community. The rate at which hospitalized waiver clients return to the community will be closely analyzed as well as the rate the elderly population become waiver clients for the first time after acute hospitalizations which may or may not include a nursing home stay.
