Veterans with Dual Receipt of Opioid Prescriptions at Increased Risk of Overdose

March 11, 2019

CP3 Director Walid Gellad is an author on a new Annals of Internal Medicine paper showing veterans with dual receipt of opioid prescriptions from the VA and Medicare Part D are 3.5 times as likely to die from overdose. In an article in US News and World Report, Gellad discusses the paper's findings, noting that the issue may be due more to poor oversight from systemic problems rather than from patients gaming the system. "Only in some limited circumstances -- and we don't know how many -- is this purposeful behavior by a patient to try and get additional opioids."
