Family caregivers with primary malignant brain tumors are at particular risk for poor outcomes because they face both oncologic and neurodegenerative issues. Research shows that depressive symptoms interfere with a person’s ability to engage in and benefit from interventions. The SmartCare Study was a multi-site, three arm randomized trial ti compare the efficacy of an intervention for depressive symptoms (Beating the Blues) prior to needs-based caregiver intervention (SmartCare) versus SmartCare alone versus enhanced care as usual (CAU+) in improving caregivers’ psychological and physical health.
