Biography

Stephen Smagula, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh.  He is interested in understanding why older dementia caregivers develop depression and using this knowledge to logically target interventions. He is particularly interested in clarifying the modifiable 24-hour behavioral and thought patterns that drive depression risk and resilience in caregivers and understanding neurobiological markers of variability in depression risk (Depression in Dementia Caregivers Study).

Dr. Smagula is also working to develop a mobile-wearable technology to understand and intervene on the modifiable daily patterns of activities and thoughts which increase depression in caregivers (Circadian Activity Profiling System).
